Growing Strong, Healthy Nails

You may be the nail salon’s most loyal customer but does that necessarily mean you have the healthiest nails? Unfortunately, no. While the look and cleanliness of your nails do say a lot about the kind of pampering it gets, it does not say much about the real condition of your nails. Clean is not always healthy.

So here are some tips on how to keep your nails strong and healthy:

  1. Never grow them too long.
  2. Very long nails are prone to breaking and bending backwards getting splits. Keep your nails at a manageable length, ideally just a teeny wee bit over the edge of your finger. Oh, and keep a nail file close by. Helps for those emergency wayward nail situations!

  3. Be mindful of what you put on your nails.
  4. Not every nail product is good for you. Veer away from nail products that contain toxic substances like formaldehyde. And go for nail strengtheners and keratin coats.

  5. Protect your nails from the natural elements.
  6. Too much heat can cause your nails to become dry and brittle. So do the harsh winter temperatures. And too much and too long an exposure to water can also weaken your nails.

  7. Massage your cuticles regularly and get weekly treatments.
  8. Overdue nail polish strips off the natural coating of the nail and can actually leave a permanent stain. So make your mani trips a weekly thing; and aside from pushing the cuticles, make sure you give it a nightly massage. It promotes a healthy, strong growth of your nails.
